Not being a brit, I may be very wrong,  but if I understand correctly, 
 a spanner is something like a box end wrench (like a 3/4" or 12mm 
wrench you use to take your carburator off your Cobra GT) while a pipe 
wrench is very diff in that it is adjustable,  has teeth to grip the 
pipe with and would royally fsck up any nut or bolt it was applied to.
