Mplayer does play almost any format, and has a mozilla plugin (I never managed to make the vlc plugin work).
It can't play HTML and SWF, but that's the Mozilla part anyway. Mplayer's Mozilla plugin is of course a Mozilla Mplayer plugin (embedding the player into Mozilla not vice versa). I didn't took a look at the plugin after my bad experiences with the VLC plugin, but probably its handling is more flexible - in particular I need proper event handling support, otherwise the control over the player is too limited. ... hmm I just downloaded and compiled it, looks promising. It has event handling, but some flickering/green frame problems as well. Probably these can be workarounded by some preloading mechanism. I think I'll spend some time on this. Thanks for the pointer.
