window decorations (or how to get rid of them)

My app, which is now finally starting to go quite well, needs to be able
to switch off (some of) the window decorations. 

I have established that using 'popup' windows in not much use, if one
wants editable fields. So I have 'toplevel' ones with
$win->set_decorated(0) set. This works fine in metacity but not in many
other window managers (it seems).

What I actually want is just a frame and no title bar (and a small X
window manager that honours whatever it is I ask).
