Hi Tor.  I think I solved it (well to be honest, someone solved it for me).
I wasn't calling g_thread_init().  I didn't realise I'd need to call it if I
was using pthreads.  Adding the call seems to have solved the problem
though.  Does that make sense?  Thanks.
