Default to the Solaris linker on Solaris sounds sensible to me. But I don't
understand how it finds it if it's not in your path. Also, surely it's in a
very common path?

Please show us examples of other packages (e.g. GTK+) that do things like
you expect. At that point you should probably be able to make a patch too.

If this is a problem with autoconf in general then you should investigate on
the autoconf mailing list.
