it was LFS 5.1 with compiler: gcc version 3.4.0 20040416 (prerelease)
i tried both versions of libgnomecanvasmm (2.6.0 and 2.6.1)
i guess this is a gcc 3.4 incompatiblity. 

because of system switching (back to debian) i cannot provide more information
