I used:

bool on_prefs_cancel_btn_clicked(GdkEventAny* ev)
...
prefs_diag->signal_delete_event().connect( sigc::ptr_fun(&on_prefs_cancel_btn_clicked) );

And it worked. signal_delete_event() returns 
Glib::SignalProxy1< bool,GdkEventAny* > so
your listener must use 1 argument of type GdkEventAny*, return bool.
