first of all: Thank you for your quick reply!
I need to download the unparsed XML because I have to validate it, currently we are writing some sort of test suite for UPnP devices.
Thank you for the Wireshark-hint, it helped us understand the problem (which was not libgupnp-related).
We now managed to download the service- and device-descriptions over HTTP via the URLs libgupnp provides.

Why do you need to download the XML? You can build any control point
from the data that GUPnP gives you (see gupnp-universal-cp).
As to why the download fail, I've no idea. I suggest you use a packet
sniffer such as wireshark because downloading the URL that the service
gives you should work (and that's all GUPnP does, using libsoup).
