[LIBART] cairo vs libart?

Hello

I want to write a little gnome applet and to take advantage of antialiased graphics and alpha transparency. After browsing through the gnome site, browsing the archives and countless days of pondering I still can't decide what library to use. Will cairo replace libart in gnome or provide they functionality that complements each other?
