I think you shouldn't try to support him if he thinks it's a good idea
to implement his own STL just to use libxml++. That's a platform of 1
person.

I don't think so.
I suggest that, instead of complicating things now, you let people patch
in optionality later if they require it. If they don't provide the patch
then they don't care - it's a principle that works.
