This works only so long as the "main" compositor isn't doing very much.
You want the magnifier to be able to see the window as it's actually
drawn, not how it would be rendered if the compositor in the window
manager weren't running.  So either you have to have the magnifier
render all the same effects (implies halved performance) or you have to
have the magnifier in the main compositor.

The simplest approach I can see would be to have the magnifier show an
empty window, and set window manager properties which instruct the
compositor to render a magnified version of a portion of the screen into
the window.  This way an external app could handle the UI portion, but
depend on the compositor to do the actual rendering.
