Referencing GTK colors

Hello there,

I'm currently learning to create Metacity themes and am trying to reference colors defined in the GTK theme where possible. I know I can refer to gtk:dark[NORMAL] and so forth, however, I could not find any information on whether or not I drill down to subsets of styles i.e. dark > bg > normal. What is the correct syntax, if indeed there is any?
