Have solved the problem

There is something wrong with the freetype-devel rpm

To make it work I manually oved /usr/include/freetype2/freetype/ to
*SNIP*

Do you have got freetype2 out of deb/rpm's ? Yes?
Then simply change the include to <freetype2/freetype/WHATEVER.h>
 and it'll work.
You may want to add a -I/usr/include/freetype2 rather than changing the
include statements, as the include files themselves are going to need
the include path.
