By this do you mean a virtual view? 
My impression of this is that similar to a vfolder in evolution, nautilus
takes $HOME/.* and hides them, replacing all these files with a single folder
which has $HOME/.* in it.  

If this *isn't* what was meant, how about something like that?  User
configurable too (just like vfolders).... lets say I want to have a vfolder in
my $HOME with all my backup files... or at least view it that way through
nautilus.  I'd just have to specify that the folder location will be
"$HOME/backups", it'll be recursive (checkbox to indicate that even files in
$HOME/work/current/project42 will be checked) and the pattern match will be
"*\..(~|\.tmp|#)" (or whatever... my regex-foo might be slipping).

This sort of thing would be virtual only, and won't affect actual files on the
system, but could potentially be helpful in making nautilus more powerful.
Not something for the newbies of course, except the "user config directory"
mentioned earlier perhaps, but available for the power users.
