By the way, it works like this (this is GTK behavior):

For non-alpha characters, what you see in the menu is the unshifted symbol
if it says "Cntl <whatever>" or the shifted symbol if it says "Cntl Shift
<whatever>". For example, we use Cntl = for zoom in, because the + symbol is
on the = key and + is a good mnemonic for zooming in. If the menu said "Cntl
Shift +" then you would need to hold down the Shift key also, which would be
annoying since you don't have to hold it down for zoom out (Cntl -). If you
tell GTK that the character is "+" but the modifier is only Control, then
Cntl + appears in the menu but there is no way to type it from the keyboard.
(Doh!)

For alpha characters, the capital letter always appears in the menu. If it
just says "Cntl A" that means you press the "a/A" key with the Control key
but no other modifiers, not even Shift. If you do press Shift, the keyboard
equivalent won't match (somewhat surprising if you think about it). This
behavior matches Macintosh and probably Windows too (though I don't have a
Windows machine nearby to check).

If the keyboard equivalent in the menu is Cntl Shift A, then you must hold
down the Shift key. Caps lock won't do.  : )
