Hi Havoc,

        I agree that it's ugly having permissions emblems on every icon.

        I think one of your suggestions is great: only show a permissions
emblem for files that are "differently writeable"  than their containing
directory.  It seems pretty easy to implement; the hardest part will be
making the emblem images for the opposite states.

        Let me know if you'd like me to work on this.
