I meant most of what you say above. The code on HEAD is faster than 1.0, 1.
0.1, 1.0.2, or 1.0.3. It will probably go out as 1.0.4 though, not 1.1 or 
above. And I'm not saying it's now "fast enough". More speed improvement 
is needed and help with it would be welcome.
