Worked around? Why fix it if it ain't broke? If you'd read the link I posted the other day, you'd see that all the things that you are aiming for are easily possible WITHOUT borking up the root window!

Anti-aliased text and even TRANPARENCY are available with X4.0.3 and Xrender. (And don't complain that X4 is too new. Everything else that Nautilus uses is cutting edge and just about every major distro now offers the option of X4.)
