[Nautilus-list] Nautilus Preferences

The following questions are based on the Nautilus menubar -> Preferences
-> Edit Preferences window. Any/all help is appreciated.

Appearance:
What does smoother but slower do? Anti-aliasing?
Same question for Default smooth font.
When is a smooth vs. non-smooth font used?
What is the difference between Helvetica Default (for the default smooth
font) and helvetica (for the default non-smooth font?

Windows & Desktop:
When you turn off Use Nautilus to draw the desktop what controls how the
desktop looks?
