I'd like to see this implemented. The most natural way to make it work
properly would be to move the metadata and notification machinery into
gnome-vfs. If gnome-vfs then monitored the files that had metadata stored in
them, and noticed changes by other processes, this feature would
"automatically materialize" with no other changes to Nautilus itself.

That said, I think it might not make it in Gnome 2.0 since we will have our
hands full just porting Nautilus.

It's also possible that there's some simple hack we can do instead in the
mean time. I won't personally tackle that, but I would certainly accept a
well-thought-out patch.
