Nope, you're not missing anything-- the way you do it is perfectly
reasonable, although I suspect the tunnelling method would be slightly
more efficient once you learned how to use it. But a good GUI always
offers alternative ways of doing the same thing, and this just happens
to be your preferred one. But, for example, many people aren't
comfortable with using tree controls, or prefer to have the sidebar
hidden to save screen space, so one size doesn't fit all.
You may also want to try explaining to those members of the GNOME UI
Guidelines team who want to do away with the "popup menu on right-button
drag" convention in GNOME that your way is better :o)
