i wrote to the list a few months ago suggesting that either
a) the tree be reworked to show devices like this ( the kde sidebar in
konqueror does this, as does windows explorer, to some extent) or 
b) the bookmarks should be moved to the sidebar, and be organized into
some sort of tree themselves.

there may be usability issues with the implementation of a), since there
would be multiple tree entries for, say, cd-roms.

at any rate, i dont see the reasoning on getting rid of the throbber for
what seems to be just for the sake of getting rid of it. replacing it
with a giant translucent gnome foot seems like adding a lot more visual
noise in exchange for no usability benefit.
