For probably two years now I've had:

  ~/Public/
  ~/Public/ftp/
  ~/Public/www/

With the httpd's ~/public_html thing pointing to ~/Public/www/ and something
similar for ftpd (though, I don't recall what and must've removed it)
pointing to ~/Public/ftp/ .

This was just for my wee laptop, and I'm the only user. For general
consumption, more descriptive names would probably be better; though,
people do see http://www.... in all sorts of advertisements.

Cheers,
Greg Merchan
