Desktop "Disks" menu

Hi, can anyone tell me how to rename entries on the the desktop right
click "disks" (mounting) menu? I've got a DVD-ROM drive which appears in
the menu as "CD-ROM" and a CD writer which appears as "cdrom1". very
confusing for the user. I'd like something like "DVD" for the DVD-ROM
and "CD-R" for the CD writer.

Confusing for me as well, as "cdrom1" seems to come from /etc/fstab, but
I've no idea where "CD-ROM" comes from. Other entries on the disks menu
(e.g. the dos mount and digital camera) take their names from fstab, as
I'd expect. It is possible to change the "cdrom1" entry by changing fstab and the device symbolic link/mountpoint to another name, but doing the same to the "cdrom" fstab entry (which ends up as "CD-ROM" on the disks menu) is only temporary until next reboot. Redhat's Kudzu hardware detection utility seems to have something to do with it, but if I remove the kudzu option from fstab, all sorts of strange things happen with the permissions to mount disks, etc.

I'm sure with enough messing around I could get what I wanted by manipulating fstab and the /dev symbolic links and the mountpoints, but it would seem simpler to change the default Disks menu entries. However, I've searched the internet (and the files on my machine) in vain to find where the menu labels are stored.

Could someone please explain how this works?

My system is Redhat 8.0 (Gnome 2, etc)

Many thanks,

Darrell
