Non-working preferences

Regarding the previewing preferences, both the show text in icons and
show thumbnail preferences do not seem to work anymore. The show text in
icons feature just doesn't work, and it is impossible to disable
thumbnailing apparently.

Do we intend to support these prefs in 2.2? If not we should probably
remove the ui for them. However preferably  it would be nice to fix at
least the image file preview pref.
