I think it's unlikely that people would *keep* two windows open for the
same directory, but it's very handy if you need to copy/move files
between directories that have the same root but differ by two or more
levels[1].

E.g., to copy files from /a/b/c to /a/b/c/d/e, all you need to do is:

- navigate to /a/b/c
- open new window
- drill down to d/e in the new window
- copy/paste/drag stuff between the two windows

I'm only guessing, but that sort of thing, is probably going to be a
more common operation than moving stuff between /a/b/c and your home
directory.  (It's certainly the more common operation for me, anyway).

[1] Right now, in fact, you even have to this for directories that only
differ by one level if you're a keyboard-only user, because if you
select a folder and hit Paste, the files don't actually go into the
folder.  Duh  :)
