Text, Gnumeric viewers

I have been trying to get nautilus to launch gedit or gnumeric when I
double click on a text or gnumeric file. I can't seem to get it to
happen. I have gone into the file types and programs control panel and
configured all spreadsheets and text files to launch programs and not to
use a viewer. Problem is this doesn't work! How can I fix this?
