You may consider James' example to be a hack, but the functionality is very
useful beyond purely technical user aesthetic issues. See Mac OS X, for
example, which has a visibly complete UNIX filesystem that you do not see in
the Finder. How? Sensible .hidden files.
The lengthy arguments about home directory dotfiles are best taken to
xdg-list, where they are almost on topic. :-)
