Error compiling gnome-vfs/nautilus

I am trying to compile install 2.3.6 and get an error when "make install"ing
gnome-vfs-2.3.5 - 
"/usr/bin/install: cannot stat `./html/index.sgml':"
and bombs out.

eel2.3.6 compiled/installed fine.

if I use "make install -i" it passes by the error and appears to have worked
but now nautilus complains during its compile routine that "gnome-vfs is still
only 2.2.5"

I am using RH9 with XD2

any help will be mucho appreciated
