Nautilus goes crazy

When I start up Gnome (v2.2) on my FBSD (4.7) box, nautilus goes CRAZY!
It opens up window after window, hundreds of 'em until finally I have
to issue a "killall -TERM nautilus" to kill nautilus (can't close 'em
fast enough to stay caught up.
Any ideas as to what might be the culprit?
