mounting removable media in 2.6

As desktop context menu entry "disks" is apparently gone in 2.6,
I wonder what is preferred way / procedure for common users to
mount / manage  their removable media. I'm switching a lot of
CD's, USB storage gadgets and even floppies during my work day
and I'd like to get some expert insight on this topic.

Thanks for pointing me to some whitepapers or for sharing some
