Well in the name of progress if gnome-volume-manager does get into 2.8
along with the requisite underling utopia stack volumes will automount
and show up on your desktop when discovered (i.e. plugged in). 
Mounting/unmounting should be transparent for the most part except for
USB devices in which it is always prudent to unmount them before yanking
them (though I have been successful at yanking them without loosing
data, it still is a  gamble).  For the most part mount and unmount are
ugly OS details that should not be exposed to the user.
