By the popup you mentioned that asks if the pasting should occur.

If the benefit is so great, why not shorten the period to say 1s so
you never have to press the button longer?

Esc is nice, but tell that to the helpdesk worker who answers "press
esc" for the nth time when someone calls and says "how do I get rid of
this thing that follows my mouse?" (discoverability).
