I tried it, didn't work. I also noticed, though, that current nautilus doesn't handle changing renamability very well any way. It doesn't monitor state, only changing the sensitivity of widgets when you try to rename it but can't. An updated version of my patch (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=149201#c6) does this correctly, swapping the entry for a label.
