You used to be able to delete the icons, but we got bug reports that
this was confusing, so it was removed. I'm sure we can find usability
experts who argue both ways. 

This sorts of oneway preference setting is bad in the same way as "don't
show me this dialog again" checkboxes, which the UI people recommend not
to use. To really be fully working they need some actual UI to reenable
it again, and we've already decided that this preference isn't important
enough to have a UI for (thus its gconf only).

At the end of the day, the maintainers calls the shots. If the usability
people disagree with my decision, they have to convince me.
