script to set custom icons and emblems

Hi,

Is there a script that allows you to set custom icons and emblems to files?

I was thinking about a script that automatically sets emblems on
subversion controlled files for example.

One solution would be to directly edit/create the xml files in
~/.nautilus/metafiles/, not sure if this is the right thing to do though
(and it may not be that easy).

Any hints or suggestions are more than appreciated.
