Personally I find it handy to be able to click anywhere on the line to
select a file. Sometimes I find myself selecting files by date or by
type or depending on a combination of columns, but not necessarily the
filename. If not selecting by filename, you may have to scroll
horizontally to the filename in order to select.

"Rubberbanding" in the list view would be handy, how about activating
"rubberbanding" if the shift key is held down (presuming that key is not
in use) ?
