I can't confirm this issue completely. While I do get a question mark
when dragging, after dropping it creates a link to the URL just fine,
either in a folder or the desktop. It does seem to require a decent
amount of CPU and HDD activity to complete on the desktop though, hmm.

 Thanks for the feedback, that's what I wanted to hear so now I think my problem is that I'm behind a proxy regarding internet access,  and when doing the dragging it tries to get some info about the file and so the hang.

 I see two problems here, firstly being that GIO should be aware of my proxy settings to access internet, and secondly that DND'ing a url to the desktop shouldn't need  internet access at all, or should be optional.

Well, I'll try to figure this things out and probably file some bugs.
