I don't think making the MIME-type part of the interface name is a good idea at all. libgnomeui does this, and it means that there's an explosion of MIME-types that must be registered (this is GNOME bug #545130[1]). It would be better if the API allowed a MIME-type parameter, so that it could perform a search, from specific to general, of the available thumbnailers.
Furthermore, wouldn't placing the MIME-type in the serivce name make it impossible for more than one thumbnailer to be registered per MIME-type? That seems a large choice for the API to decide.
