That is not neccessarily true. I know that the Nikon RAW file format also
stores jpeg encoded preview images ('thumbnails') within the RAW file
Yes, nautilus (2.22.2 on my system) apparently uses embedded JPEG thumbnail
for thumbnailing RAW files (at least Canon .CR2 files).
Please note that originally reported problem[1] is different one anyway.
