This happened to me yesterday, also on Fedora 8. After I cleaned the
gconf connections with:
$ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /system/networking/connections
and restarted the applet NM started connecting to wired again.
Without having looked at the code, maybe the applet is assuming that
the 1st connection (i.e. /system/networking/connections/1) is always
wired which wasn't my case when it happened.
