Programmatically adding a wireless connection to network manager configuration?

I have an application that acquires wifi connection information from a user including SSID, encryption type (e.g., WPA2 Personal or WPA Enterprise) and password. Is there a way I can programmatically inform Network Manager about this new connection rather than require the user to access the applet from the desktop?
