this is exactly what gnome-db does (http://www.gnome-db.org). It is similar
to ODBC, but entirely based on CORBA.
There are some missing things in gnome-db though for total CORBA
integration, which is, for example, support for the database query CORBA
service, but those things are planned.
Ah! BTW, although the project is called gnome-db, the data access
framework (which is called libgda) is totally GNOME-independent.
