Hi Robin:
This area is kind of a mess right now -- keyboard navigation is
troublesome in the top and bottom panels, and especially troublesome in
the notification area. :-(
For now, you can try Ctrl+Alt+Tab to get to the top or bottom panel, and
pressing Tab and/or the Left/Right arrow keys to move around. When you
get to something that only says "Embedded Component" something
uninformative like that, you should be able to press Ctrl+F1 to bring up
the tooltip for the object, if it has one.
We (GNOME) are indeed trying to improve the accessibility of these
things -- I can't dig up the bug numbers for you to watch, though, since
Bugzilla is acting up at the moment. :-(

Hello,
Just installed Debian with Gnome and Orca on my Asus Eee. Just one
question: how can I access the systray where I can check battery status
and so on? Thanks!
