Interesting. And I apologize for the confusion. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04
but without vinux, for now anyway. Sometimes Orca will tell me the
current desktop environment is Unity; others it will tell me that it is
classic gnome. The behavior of the keyboard commands, though, seems to
be the same. To me, and I'm still pretty newbie, so that may not mean
much.
Anyway, I tried using Control + ALT + TAB and got nothing. I tried
tabbing through the icons, and again got nothing. I need to use F10 to
get to the same place, then use the arrow keys to move between the menu
offerings and the icons for networking and so forth.
I wonder if it's vinux that makes the difference? Or if when Orca
announces that the desktop environment is classic gnome, that's a
mistake somehow... There are some things I don't like that much about
Unity for using it with Orca, so I will be looking for alternatives like
vinux, once I know what I'm doing and am caught up on my work. /smile/

I don't understand the instructions below. What application are you in
when you hit F10?
I'm running vinux 3.2.1, which is based on Ubuntu 11.04 and uses the
Gnome Classic desktop, and if I want to access a wireless network,I do
the following:
First, I press control+alt+tab until I hear something like "bottom
expanded edge panel". I then use the tab or shift+tab keys until I get
to "NM Applet Icon". At this point, I press the space bar to open the
menu and then down arrow until I hear the network I'm interested in.
Once I hear the network I want to connect to, I just hit the enter key.

Tom,
If you're using the standard desktop US qwerty keyboard -- or, I believe
the equivalent laptop keyboard -- hit F10 to access the menu bar. You
can then use the arrow keys to move to the notification area to find the
right icon. Mine doesn't announce which notification, icon is the one
for networking, it just says "image," so I have to arrow down to read
the first menu item for a given image to make sure I'm in the right menu
for, say, sound or networking. Once you find the icon for networking,
then you can arrow through the menu items, which will include wireless
networks available to you, and you can find the network you want to
connect to. I found this process a bit confusing at first, and still
have to fumble around in it before I get the right connection. Once it's
done, you're good to go, though and can set the network you want as your
default connection. At the bottom of the menu you reach through the
notification area, there are options to edit networks and a few other
things.
Sorry I can't be more specific. I'm a relative newbie, too, so still
haven't quite figured out a quicker way without vague fumbling. /smile/
I do need to muck around with my router later on today or tomorrow, so
if I learn anything new and useful, I will let you know.
Good luck!
