Andi, Try press Orca modifier+CTRL+Space keystroke when Thunderbird
launched.
After present Orca application-specific preferences dialog, press left
arrow key to goto Thunderbird page, and check the "Automatically start
speaking a page when it is first loaded" check box.
If you checked this check box, click Ok button and try opening an
another e-mail. Orca will begin reading you entire e-mail message.
If this suggestion are not help, if an e-mail opened, press F7 key until
Thunderbird not ask you you would like enabling cursor browsing or not.
This step you need doing one time.
I haven't got another ydea, hopefuly other users giving you another tips
or workarounds.
Hopefuly any suggestion help resolving your experienced problem,
