Apparently pulseaudio starts in system mode on ubuntu 12.04, and this is causing a show stopper problem for
me. When I install the system, the
machine talks and all is well for the first while, but, turn the power off and let the machine cool off
over night then restart, and sound has been
permanently silenced. I cannot give you any debug files because I don't know how, and on top of that,
there is no access to the machine when this
happens.
I've never encountered anything like this.
Try booting from a live CD which is accessible (make sure you have one of
these in case of future problems - I personally like grml - see
http://grml.org/). Then mount your /var file system and delete
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state if it exists. Also, delete any .pulse directory in
your home directory. Finally, unmount the file systems, reboot from the hard
drive and hope for better results.
