Hi Joanie,
Just one more thing.
I did a sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*
then added the ppa for Libreoffice version 4.
Then did a sudo apt-get install libreoffice-base libreoffice-core
libreofffice-calc etc, along with libreoffice-gnome and libreoffice-gtk.
Are these the right packages?
Happy hacking.
Krishnakant.

Ah, so I am using 4.0.2.1 and that to on Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity 2D.
could that mean this combination is the wrong one?
Not sure if it's the "wrong one". But clearly something is not right in
your environment. Assuming you didn't do anything yourself that might be
responsible (i.e. built the software you are using; chose some
preference somewhere that is impacting keyboard navigation; etc.) I
would ask in the Ubuntu accessibility community/mailing list.
By the way I get orca to announce all items as checkbox even though they
are menu items.
For example it says quit checkbox not checked.
If memory serves me, Unity menu items are check menu items rather than
plain ol' menu items. Though I may be mis-remembering. Regardless, Orca
just passes along what it gets. And if Orca is being told a widget is
toggle-able, it doesn't know that it really isn't. Perhaps someone in
the Ubuntu accessibility community/mailing list can help clarify that
for you as well.
Sorry I don't know more.
