Yes indeed this could be done. Quite a while ago on the speech-dispatcher mailing list there was a discussion 
about writing a generic serial synth framework for speech-dispatcher, but nothing has come of it yet. I 
suspect as time goes on, hardware synths will be even less of a priority for those working on Linux speech 
related projects.
