Sounds like you may have the gnome terminal incompletely installed. I use it all the time and it works well for me. You might try the Mate terminal. It’s accessible too if you can’t get the Gnome-terminal to work. Also, I gave it a try from the native console and I saw several errors but I was thinking that was OK since I wasn't inside GNOME at the time. I saw some messages about not being able to access the display or something. I'll have to give this more attention when I get home from work tonight. I've never seen this before so I can't imagine how or why this fails.
